Simple Ways to Participate this Easter
Easter is on Sunday, April 1st (no fooling!) and there are some really easy and simple ways for us to prepare as a church family for Easter 2018…
There’s five ways for you to be involved BEFORE Easter Sunday:
#1 Attend our Community Palm Sunday Prayer Service.
On Palm Sunday, March 25th at 6pm we will be having our annual Community Palm Sunday Prayer Service hosted by the Garden Valley Church. The last couple of years we have hosted this service and we have been blessed to do so and this year it will be held at Garden Valley Church. I have been working and praying with Pastor Craig at GVC and Pastor Brian from Westside as we plan and put this service together. There will be worship led by a team of musician s and worship leaders from the different churches in Douglas County and we will pray together for our communities, our families and our churches in anticipation of Easter Sunday.
You will be glad you did. By the way, this is a great opportunity to invite friends and family that are believers that go to different churches. It’s about sharing this night as a community of faith. As of right now we have a dozen different churches & ministries that will be represented. It’s going to be special. One thing we are going to do on that day is we are going to be praying specifically for people to become followers of Jesus Christ for the first time.
#2 Use our Easter Prayer Guides and sign up to pray during our 24 Hours of Prayer.
We have Easter Prayer Guides that are available in the church office and in the lobby of our church. I want to encourage you to pray daily leading up to our Easter Sunday. You’ll see that it is separated into different segments and if you ray through this it should take you somewhere between 20 minutes to 45 minutes. In addition to using this guide on a daily basis, leading up to Good Friday, we will have 24 Hours of Prayer. We want you to sign up to pray throughout that 24-hour period in half hour segments. As of right now (Sunday, March 18th), there are only eight spots left to sign up for! To sign up, call the church office.
This prayer guide is designed to help you pray for yourself and pray outward. It’s also designed to help you pray for a period of time, uninterrupted and focused. I know there may be some of you that have never sat down and prayed for twenty minutes and so this guide was created so that you could take it and pray and read through it and if you do so each section should take about five minutes and the entire guide should take at least twenty – forty-five minutes. PLUS ~ we will gather together here in the sanctuary at the conclusion of our 24 hours of prayer and pray together on Good Friday at 6pm. We’ll spend that last hour of the 24 hours of prayer together praying through this prayer guide. Imagine us praying together for our families, our community, our church family over the next few weeks. Then praying during the 24 hours of prayer and then gathering for the Good Friday Prayer Service.
Our prayer life reveals our dependence on God. That’s why we are committing so much time and energy to our prayer efforts. As a church family we just studied through the book of Nehemiah. Remember what we just learned by going through the book of Nehemiah? The work, the actual rebuilding of the wall only took fifty-two days. But the preparation, the prayer, the commitment to depending on God was marked by consistence prayer. And that prayer enabled them to keep their focus on God despite opposition and difficulty.
#3 Join us for our Easter Beautification Work Day.
On Saturday, March 24th at 9am we will be having our Easter Beautification Work Day. We’ll have donuts and coffee for everyone and get started right away to our Work Day. Bring your work gloves and your shovels and other landscaping tools as we will have all sorts of things to do. There will be some general landscaping and cleaning that we do to touch up the property leading up Easter. There will be some touch up painting projects here and there and some cleaning stuff we do on the inside of the church as well.
#4 LIKE & SHARE our Easter Advertising on Facebook.
Starting Monday, March 20th you should start seeing our Easter Advertising on Facebook. Use this opportunity to LIKE and SHARE our Easter Facebook Event and Advertising and in doing so, you’ll be inviting your friends and family. It’s a great way to spread our Easter invitation to thousands of people with very little effort.
#5 Use our Invite Cards.
We have beautiful invite cards for you to use to pass out in the community. These are available through our church office and in the lobby leading up to our Easter Service. Hand these to people you have a relationship with. The guy or gal who makes your coffee in the morning. The waitress you see a couple times a month. The coworker at work. The family and friends you have that live in town. These are the people that you should hand these to. Most people are willing to go church for the first time on Easter if they are invited by someone they know. Be that person this Easter!
#6 Find a way to participate.
Our elders cannot pull off an Easter Service on their own. Our staff cannot pull off an Easter Service on their own. Pastor Darren and I cannot pull of an Easter Service on our own. We need you.
We need each other. We need you. So, participate this year! Look at Titus 3:8…
This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
If you have trusted God, it is our responsibility to devote ourselves to what is good. And when we do that, it proves that this excellent and profitable for everyone. Why devote ourselves to doing what is good? Look at how this passage started in Titus 3:3-5…
3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.
You see the reason we make a big deal about Easter is because of the kindness and love of God and because of His mercy. That kindness, the love and His mercy appeared in our lives because someone, somewhere introduced us to the Savior. Maybe they brought us to church, maybe they introduced us to a Bible study, maybe they showed us love by extending a friendship to us….But everyone of us that have seen the kindness, the love and the mercy of God has been introduced to the Savior by someone else.
That’s how the Gospel, the Good News, works.
Maybe it was a parent, maybe it was a brother or sister, maybe it was a Sunday School teacher or a friend. Maybe it was a combination of people. But it was someone. They introduced us to the Savior and He saved us. Because someone participated in the Gospel. That’s how it works. So, as we look towards our Easter Sunday…Participate. Get involved.
For this one very special event. For this one very day, when people’s hearts will be more sensitive, participate. Get involved.
There are so many ways to participate:
- Family Portrait Station
- Parking Lot Attendants
- Kitchen Helpers to help with servers
- Kitchen Helpers to help with clean up
- Children’s Workers
All these ways of participation will be a way to serve our community and our guests and allow us to connect with them and for them to be able to hear about the kindness, love and mercy of our Savior. If you have any questions about helping in any of the areas above please call the church office at (541) 672-4566 or text myself at (541) 530-4912.
Here are some things you can do to be involved ON Easter Sunday Morning:
#1 Check in to church first thing on Easter Sunday morning on Facebook.
If you do it first thing in the morning, your friends may see that and think well there’s someone I could go to church with. You never know!
#2 Come have some breakfast with us.
The more of you that will be here for breakfast the more opportunities we will have to connect with our guests that will be joining us.
#3 Smile and say ‘hi’ to people you don’t know.
#4 Fill out a Connection Card.
Fill it out completely front and back.
1 –it’s a great Sunday for us to update our records so fill it out complete.
Your name, address, phone number, email, etc…give us all the information so we can update our information for our church family.
2 – Guests will feel more comfortable and confident in giving us some contact information if they see that you are filling it out. The way we use that information from our guests is I will reach out to them and find out how we can bless those who are visiting. It also gives me an opportunity to contact them to find out how we can pray for those visiting our church family.
#5 Help people find a seat and a spot.
If you have some space in your row, scoot over, make it easy on them.
Plus, if you are physically able to – we’d encourage you to use some of our outer parking spots:
- The bank parking
- The street parking
- Across the street in the courthouse parking just across the street
#6 Pray during the Invitation.
There is going to be two different opportunities for the invitation on Easter.
One – there will be an opportunity for those people who know Christ to come forward and give him the burdens and weights that they have been carrying.
Two – there will be an opportunity for people to come forward and become followers of Jesus Christ for the very first time as well.
We will also have an opportunity for people to meet with men and women after the service to pray in a little more private setting.
And finally, The THREE ‘NOT’s’ of inviting someone to Easter Sunday:
*Invite someone who is NOT in church.
*Invite someone who is experiencing circumstances that are NOT going well.
*Invite someone who just had something happen they were NOT prepared for.
I am so excited to share the Good News of the Gospel with our community and I am looking forward to having you be apart of this special day.
