Study Retreat This Week

Dear church,

This week I’m writing to you in order to share an exciting opportunity that I have been blessed with and to express my gratitude for your understanding and support. A few months ago I was presented the opportunity to attend a Pastor's Study retreat. What’s a study retreat, you might ask? Well, it’s an opportunity for me to gather with twenty to thirty other pastors in the Pacific Northwest to do a deep dive study…in this case, we will be studying the New Testament book of Galatians. The retreat will be led and taught by Dr. Nijay Gupta, a Ph.D. New Testament professor. We’ll gather in Saint Benedict, Oregon at the Mount Angel Abbey. When I expressed my desire to attend, our elders were very enthusiastic about the opportunity (thank you so much to our elders!).

During this retreat, we will be delving deeply into the scriptures, exploring the nuances and depths of the book of Galatians. Through lectures, discussions, and personal study, we will seek to enrich our understanding of God's Word and refine our preaching and teaching skills – all in four days! I am really excited and eager to engage in this time of intensive study and spiritual growth, as I believe it will not only benefit me personally but also equip me to better serve our church community. Tentatively, we will be diving into the book of Galatians verse-by-verse in 2025 sometime. I’m looking forward to this retreat in a few ways.

First, it provides a focused and dedicated time for spiritual renewal and rejuvenation. These four days will offer a sacred space to draw near to God, to reflect on His Word, and to be filled afresh with His Spirit.

Second, it offers a unique opportunity for professional development and learning. As pastors, we are called to be lifelong learners, continually growing in our knowledge and understanding of God and His Word. It has been over twenty years since I graduated from Bible College with my Bachelor’s and Master’s! Continuing education isn’t always easy in ministry so I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity. Studying with fellow pastors and a seasoned professor will deepen my theological understanding, sharpen my exegetical skills, and gain new perspectives on preaching and teaching.

Last, it’s always incredibly refreshing for me to deepen meaningful connections and relationships among pastors. Being able to come together with colleagues from different churches and denominations creates a sense of unity and solidarity within the body of Christ. We can encourage one another, share insights and experiences, and build lasting relationships that extend beyond the duration of the retreat.

Would you pray for me this week?

Pray that I experience deep spiritual renewal and refreshment during this time away. Ask for God's presence to be palpable, filling me with His peace, joy, and wisdom as I engage in study and reflection.

Pray for fruitful learning and growth as I dive into the scriptures and engage with the teachings of the professor and fellow pastors. Ask that God open my heart and mind to receive new insights and understanding that will enrich my ministry and leadership within our church family.

Pray for my safety and well-being throughout the retreat, both physically and emotionally. Ask for protection during travel, good health during our time together, and strength to navigate any challenges or pressures that may arise.

If you and your family need anything this week please call the church office and between Pastor Darren and our elders, they will make sure to take care of you and your family.

I love you, church! See you Sunday!

~ Daniel
