Reflections After the Study Retreat

Dear church,

As you know, last week I was able to have the chance to go away for a week for a study retreat. I gathered with some twenty-five other pastors from the Northwest at the Mt. Angel Abbey near Silverton, Oregon. We spent a week studying the New Testament book of Galatians with Dr. Nijay Gupta of Northern Seminary as our scholar for the week. I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts and reflections with you all. I'm overflowing with gratitude for the experience. Allow me to unpack a bit of what's been stirring in my heart since returning.

First and foremost, I find myself more in love with Jesus.
There's something about setting aside dedicated time to focus on His Word, to soak in His presence, and to commune with Him deeply. Throughout the retreat, I felt His love and grace washing over me, renewing my spirit and drawing me closer to Him. It's truly amazing how intentional moments of devotion can reignite the flames of passion for our Savior. The setting itself provide a quiet and distraction free environment that allows my heart and my mind to hear from the Holy Spirit.

Second, my passion for teaching and proclaiming the message of the crucified Christ has been reignited.
Spending time diving into the scriptures alongside fellow pastors and under the guidance of a seasoned professor reminded me of the profound significance of the cross. It's not just a historical event; it's the very heart of our faith, the foundation of our hope. Galatians, in particular, really points us to stare deeply at the cross and the resurrected Christ whom we serve. I'm more eager than ever to share this life-transforming truth with others, to boldly declare the power of Christ's sacrifice and resurrection. As we will see together when we go through Galatians next year, it is a letter written from such a passionate point of view about the resurrected Christ. Paul goes to great lengths to beg us to consider all the ramifications of our Savior on the cross.

Also, I've been inspired to deepen my commitment to being a student of the Bible. As a pastor, I’m reading Scripture every day and studying it most days. But there is something different about having dedicated days to dig deep into the Bible. The retreat served as a powerful reminder of the inexhaustible riches found within God's Word. There's always more to learn, more depths to explore, and more treasures to uncover! The New Testament writer describes Scripture as powerful and alive! And though, I’ve read through Galatians many times over the years there was truths that jumped off the page this week that I’ve never seen before! I'm filled with a renewed sense of wonder and awe at the beauty and complexity of scripture, and I'm excited to continue my journey of discovery.

Lastly, I find myself more in love with the church in all her shapes and sizes throughout the Pacific Northwest. Connecting with fellow pastors from different backgrounds and denominations reminded me of the beautiful diversity within the body of Christ. Despite our differences, we are united by our love for Jesus and our shared mission to advance His kingdom. I'm grateful for the opportunity to build relationships, to encourage one another, and to partner together in ministry.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of you who supported me and prayed for me during this retreat. Your encouragement means the world to me, and I'm blessed to journey alongside such an amazing church family. May we continue to grow together in love, faith, and service as we seek to glorify God and advance His kingdom.

I love you, church.

Blessings,

Pastor Daniel
